20-year-old Californian who answered a newspaper ad inviting players to try out for Melbourne. He had a basketball, American Football and rugby background and was flown to Australia in September 1982 with the prospect of a two year contract if he picked up the game. Despite three weeks of intensive training with Ray Jordon, Ryan failed to make the grade and returned to the US. Sean Wight was a successful graduate of the same training.
