Bouncing back from a disappointing loss to St Kilda a week before the Demons took their record to 2-1 with a fighting win over South Melbourne at the Lake Oval.
Only the inaccuracy of Ross Dillon at full-forward for the Demons kept South in the game so long. Matched up against a fill-in full back the entire day Dillon was dominant in the play but kicked poorly to rack up 4.7.
Feeding Dillon were a winning ruck division and winners like Stan Alves on the wing and Hassa Mann in the centre. Max Walker got his side off to a good start with two booming goals in the first quarter, and when John Townsend kicked another early in the second term the margin was four goals.
It was then when South struck back and within ten minutes they were level again, but two late goals to the Demons reinstated their lead at the long break and never went behind again. South threatened twice more, getting to within four points in the last quarter but Melbourne kept holding on to their lead. The result was sealed when Mann goalled from a dubious free kick.
Best were Alves, Dillon and Mann. Rob Dowsing and Gary Hardeman were unused reserves. In what would be his last match, Don Williams hurt his back.
