August 1890 match vs Footscray

Saturday 23 August - Western Oval

Footscray 1.6, 1.6, 5.12, 5.12
Melbourne 0.0, 4.4, 5.4, 7.10

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Smith 2, Kelly 2, McLean 1, Carroll 1, Wilson 1

The game swung wildly on the wind, with Footscray ultimately losing because they wasted the opportunity in the first quarter. Melbourne were kept scoreless, but seven opportunities only delivered one goal for the locals. The Reds didn't make any mistake in the second, kicking four goals, and added one into the wind in the third to set up victory.

The local crowd were violently opposed to the umpiring, and because of their behaviour Melbourne claimed they would not play at the ground again. Footscray shot back that an ex-Melbourne player was staggering around the ground drunk during the game.

Best were Toms, Smith and Carroll.
