Playing to seal a third consecutive top four finish, the Demons were frustrated by a side whose season had long ended but held wins over high-flyers Brisbane and Collingwood. The Hawks got three of the first four goals, and even after losing the lead early in the second quarter were in the game until the final term.
Melbourne started the last quarter 13 points in front, but a quick Hawthorn goal made it interesting. They couldn't capitalise, and the Demons kicked the last three goals of the game to win.
Best were Melksham, Lever and Viney. (Josh Schache)) replaced Adam Tomlinson in the fourth quarter.
