In a week where rumours swirled about merger discussions with Fitzroy, the Demons solidified their position in the top eight by defying the emerging Bears and Brisbane's humid weather.
Both teams were on nine wins and a chance of making the eight, so they each treated it like an elimination final. In a gruelling contest nobody was ever more than 19 points in front. Brisbane was in charge early in the second quarter before Melbourne defied the loss of Todd Viney to a corked thigh to booted five unanswered goals and take a one goal lead into three quarter time.
The Demons pulled away in the last quarter before Brisbane launched a comeback. The Bears had dragged themselves back from three goals down to level, when a desperate last-ditch Graeme Yeats tackle saved a goal. Then Garry Lyon kicked a miracle goal from 45 metres out on the boundary line to steady his side before hobbling off the ground with an ankle injury.
Best were Schwarz, Lyon and Yeats. Viney's thigh complaint was the only injury of the day.
