Back on track with two wins in a row after losing their opening match of the year the Demons once again stormed to victory off the back of a strong performance by its forward line.

Heavy rain on Friday night had made the ground sodden but aerial supremacy around the ground and strong work in the packs set up the win for Melbourne who rose above the conditions to rack up their fourth straight score of more than a hundred points. The defence was still showing signs of weakness but with such a potent forward line they were always likely to kick a winning score.

Despite Melbourne's dominance in the air, Carlton briefly took the lead in the second quarter, but it was the only time they were in front all day. A third quarter burst saw Melbourne go into the last quarter 38 points in front then relax, allowing the Blues to narrow the margin to as little as two goals before Fanning and Baggott kicked steadiers. So much time off was required during the game that by the end the match was being played in near darkness.

In his first match of the season Lock was Melbourne's best, along with Baggott and Ball. Archie Roberts missed the game because he was being married on the same day. Jack Atkins was a last minute replacement for Shane McGrath, who missed a train from his workplace to the MCG. In the second quarter Fanning replaced Truscott, who was taken to hospital with a severe concussion.
