After a narrow Round 1 loss, Melbourne collapsed to a shock thrashing against a side they held a strong recent record against. A practice match win four weeks earlier was no guide, as North proved much sterner opposition in a game that counted. Despite being outplayed earlier, the Demons took a narrow lead into quarter time. The game ebbed and flowed for the next two quarters, before North kicked away to a three goal lead late in the third term off the back of numerous opposition blunders. The margin was still only three goals at the last change before the home side unleashed a blistering attack at the start of the final term, kicking six goals in a row, and eight of the nine for the quarter.

It was Melbourne's largest defeat in Victoria since Round 2, 2019, and at Docklands since Round 20, 2015.

Substitute Taj Woewodin replaced Matthew Jefferson (hand injury) in the second quarter.

Best were Chandler, Oliver, and Lindsay
