In their first competitive hitout of the new season, Melbourne fielded an understrength team against a near first choice North side. The 'match simulation' included three minutes at the end of each half where one side would defend a supposed eight point lead. After an even first half, Melbourne was the first to defend the fictional lead and conceded a goal after the siren that was counted in the final score. They ran away with a win in the second half, kicking 12 goals to four. In the last two minutes, as part of the scenario where North was defending their eight point lead, Andy Moniz-Wakefield suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Best were Pickett, Oliver and van Rooyen.
