In front of a paltry crowd in Sydney against the financially troubled Swans the Demons crashed to their second straight loss to open the season. After losing both their previous starts away to Sydney, the club changed its travel routine and arrived on Saturday. This allowed them a training run on an SCG oval. Football Manager Ray Manley said "we are trying to give our players a better chance of winning, and also ensure they are not in a rush befor the game."
The new arrangements made no difference in the first half, Melbourne was terrible and trailed by 39 points at the long break. They chipped away at the margin in the third, but their attack into the wind was poor, directing much of the play into a pocket that was hard to score from. They won the quarter but kicked 3.9 and only took 11 points from Sydney's lead. With a strong breeze in their favour for the last term they launched a strong comeback but fell short.
Best were Flower, Johnson and Healy.
