The best player on the ground in North Melbourne's 1977 premiership, and a grand final player again the following year, Tanner played exactly 100 games for the Kangaroos. After only playing games in 1983, he left North and linked up with Ron Barassi again at Melbourne.

Tanner's career at Melbourne was less successful, registering just 11 games over two seasons.

In the mid 1990s he coached Congupna to multiple premierships. In 2001 Tanner replaced former teammate Kelly O'Donnell as coach of the Murray Bushrangers.

He was one of just a handful of VFL/AFL players to play over 100 games in both the seniors and Reserves during his career. Tanner's father Gerald played one game for Richmond in 1941.
