The best player on the ground in North Melbourne's 1977 premiership, and a grand final player again the following year, Tanner played exactly 100 games for the Kangaroos. After only playing two games in 1983, he left North and linked up with Ron Barassi again at Melbourne.
Tanner's career at Melbourne was less successful, registering just 11 games over two seasons. Across his career at both clubs he played 122 games in the Reserves.
He was captain/coach of Shepparton from 1987 to 1990 before coaching Congupna to multiple premierships. In 2001 Tanner replaced former teammate Kelly O'Donnell as coach of the Murray Bushrangers.
He was one of just a handful of VFL/AFL players to play over 100 games in both the seniors and Reserves during his career. Tanner's father Gerald played one game for Richmond in 1941.
