Debuting in the WAFL in 1979, full back Holden's career took off in 1982 when he played three matches for Western Australia and impressed against both South Australia and Victoria. His success led the Demons to pick him with their second selection in the 1982 Draft, but when he travelled to Victoria for a $65,000 transfer fee in 1984 he was unable to play in his favoured position as it was already being occupied by Danny Hughes.

Holden failed to register a possession on his debut and played just two more games for 11 touches in total, before returning to Western Australia in 1985. He wanted to return to West Perth but they couldn't arrange a transfer fee with Melbourne so he went to Perth instead. After 16 games, he rejoined West Perth in mid-1987, adding another 18 games by the end of 1989 to the 79 he'd played before joining the Demons.

His brother Craig played 109 games for North Melbourne and Sydney between 1982 and 1980.
