For the second week in a row, Melbourne left themselves with a difficult task at three quarter time before a much improved last quarter made the margin respectable. With the advantage of a stiff breeze, Melbourne got the first goal but couldn't take advantage. A five point lead late in the opening term was cancelled late, and the Reds went on the defence in the second term.
Avery kicked Melbourne's fourth, but it was the only goal of the quarter for his side. The Pivotonians kicked away with the next five goals and wouldn't be caught again. During the second quarter Geelong's Hardiman took a mark that the Football Record described as "one of the most spectacular I have ever seen", but he was denied it by the umpire paying a free kick against Geelong.
Melbourne laboured badly in the third, and the locals further extended their advantage. A belated fightback in the last cut the margin to 22, and it looked like another goal was coming when a Geelong defender took a strong saving mark. They battled on, but conceded two quick goals that finished them off.
Best were Fischer, Jones and Usher. Kinner suffered a thigh injury in the first quarter. He played until three quarter time before being replaced by 19th man Deague.
