Herbert "Bert" Avery was a follower/defender who crossed from South Melbourne in April 1931.

He was a regular in his first two years, but only managed six games in 1933 and was cleared to VFA side Prahran before Round 1, 1934. Before joining Prahran he had played in Hawthorn's practice matches. Joined Camberwell in 1935, before going to Yallourn after one game. He then returned to Prahran the same year.
