Having opened up a six point lead on Geelong in the race for fourth place, the Redlegs had conceded some ground back to the Pivotonians with a surprise loss against South Melbourne the previous Saturday. Geelong had the chance to overhaul the six point gap in the space of two weeks and take Melbourne's place in the top four but were beaten narrowly in a game where neither side particularly impressed. The side's first meeting of the season had resulted in a big victory for Geelong, but in a low scoring match Melbourne just came out on top in the replay.
The match was a poor one, played on a field which had been chopped up by heavy rain and two consecutive days of schoolboy matches. Mostly played as a scramble through the mud, the close result was all that saved it from complete disaster. The quality issues for furthered by the teams trying to move the ball via short passes that were unsuited to the conditions. Geelong were on top until the middle of the third quarter when Melbourne took the lead and held onto it until the end of the day.
Despite the high stakes both teams were listless in the difficult conditions, and even though Melbourne used the breeze first they went into the quarter time break a goal behind. They got the first goal through a great run by Wittman and kept attacking, but found Geelong's defence difficult to breach. An over-reliance on aiming at Bob Johnson when he wasn't marking well cost them, and Geelong kicked three of the next four goals.
The Redlegs levelled the scores early in the second term, before the game settled into a fierce struggle for the lead. Each side kicked a goal for the term, leaving Melbourne seven points behind at half time. After a poor day with the boot, Johnson kicked his first and only goal to kick star the third quarter with the use of the breeze but his side were inaccurate and only managed 2.7 with the breeze. They held Geelong to three points and established a nine point lead at the last change.
After Wittman fumbled a certain goal in the opening minutes, it took 18 minutes for Taylor to extend the lead to 15 points. Geelong recovered strongly and kicked two goals in a row to cut the margin to two points, but a last ditch attack was turned back by Warne-Smith and Melbourne held on. Victory reopened a six point lead over fifth place, now held by St Kilda as Geelong dropped into six on percentage.
