Melbourne win by 8 points
Only MFC Game
With their finals spot secured but their position in the top two still vulnerable, the Demons travelled to Glenferrie and narrowly avoided a storming comeback by the home side.
The Demons jumped to an early lead by kicking 3.1 before the Hawks scored anything, with forward was Athol Webb the best player early. Hawthorn fought back in the second but still trailed by 17 points at the long break. They kicked two early goals in the third quarter to slash the margin to four points, before the Demons responded with a seven goal quarter to go into the last break 30 points in front.
The margin reached 33 points and the Demons seemed home, but Hawthorn fought back again and cut the gap to a goal. They kicked 5.5 to 1.4 in the last quarter, but Ian McLean kicked that solitary goal to seal the game.
Best for the Demons as they sealed a double chance were McLean, Webb and Williams. Tunbridge (thigh) was replaced by Crompton and Mithen (corked leg) by Jones in the last quarter.
