The Demons arrived as red-hot favourites against the 1-7 Hawks, and immediately started peppering the goal. After four behinds to open the game, they found their range late with the only five goals of the quarter. Hawthorn got their only goal of the half during the second quarter, but that was their only major score. Staring down the barrel of a big loss, the Hawks had their purple patch with three quick goals to open the second half. They got five of their seven goals for the day, cutting the margin to 25 points at the last change. They couldn't sustain the challenge, conceding four of the last five goals.

Best were Petracca, Viney and Rivers. James Jordon replaced Harrison Petty (foot) at half time. Christian Petracca rolled his ankle. Tom Sparrow was suspended for one match for a dangerous tackle, and Lachie Hunter was fined $1500 for unsportsmanlike conduct after leaving the bench area to gesture at a Hawthorn player who was running past him.

Ex-Demon Sam Frost played his 150th game.
