Melbourne finally won their first game of the year at the seventh attempt, but despite snapping his team's drought Neale Balme called it their worst performance of the season. "I'm relieved that we had a win, but I'm not relieved with the way we played" he said after seeing his side come from behind at three-quarter time to win.
When the side went into the huddle for three quarter time the tiny crowd booed the players. Neil Balme switched Garry Lyon from full forward onto the ball and he didn't disappoint in the late comeback. His strong performance even won praise from Brisbane coach Robert Walls. Despite being down to 18 men in the last quarter due to injuries, the home side finished better, including two quick goals from Jeff Hilton. The Demons fell over the line to win, meaning they'd still never been beaten by the Bears at the MCG.
Lyon, Hilton and Tingay were best. Sean Charles was a late withdrawal with complications from a previously broken wrist, Marcus Seecamp suffered a concussion, Darren Kowal hurt his knee and Shaun Smith bruised his back.
