Just a month after their first clash for the year, where Melbourne had only scored two goals, the second match between the sides had a much happier result for the Demons. Even though they were without key players Steven Stretch - who was injured at training - and Earl Spalding they won a thriller.

The Cats lead narrowly through the first half before Garry Lyon put on a three goal burst to put the Demons in front at the last change.

They held a 20 point lead late in the game before Geelong booted three goals in a row to bring the margin to under a goal with a minute left to play. Luckily the Demons managed to hold on to the siren.

Stephen Newport destroyed the in-form Mark Bairstow, picking up a second best on ground 28 touches of his own.

Best were Johnson, Newport and Lovett.

John Northey said "The boys were at the ball all day and we stuck to the task and hung on and won. It was a good four quarters and hopefully we are starting to get our act together".
