Looking to continue their perfect start to the season, Melbourne lost premiership players Luke Jackson, Alex Neal-Bullen, Harrison Petty, Kysaiah Pickett, Tom Sparrow and premiership coach Simon Goodwin to the league's COVID protocols. Adem Yze replaced Goodwin as coach, and his side withstood an early scare to give him a debut win. Hawthorn kicked the first two goals of the afternoon but saw their lead disappear late in the first quarter. They continued to battle throughout the day, but were beaten by a six goal to three third quarter. Melbourne failed to kick a goal in the final term, but defended well enough to keep the Hawks at bay, extending their record to 7-0. Jake Bowey played in his 14th consecutive win since debuted, tying the club record of Bryan Kenneally.

Best were Gawn, Oliver and Viney. Kade Chandler replaced Joel Smith (ankle) in the last quarter.
