With the Demons still winless the task of getting their season back on track was made harder with the late withdrawal of Garry Lyon and despite a brave performance in front of a hostile Adelaide crowd, and a second consecutive week of interstate travel, they almost managed it.

Despite losing Jim Stynes to an ankle injury in the third quarter, Melbourne recovered from a 25 point deficit after half time to lead by 11 halfway through the last quarter. The comeback was aided by throwing Marcus Seecamp forward, where he kicked two quick goals.

The visitors couldn't hold on. A Tony Modra goal from a free kick just before time on put the Crows in front, and they added another to make sure of victory. The side that played a Preliminary Final in 1994 were now on the club's worst start to a season since 1977.

Neil Balme said "I thought we were terrific most of the night but it never quite ran our way. We had the run of play but they can be very hard to toss here".

Best were Viney, Hilton and Hopgood. Garry Lyon was a late withdrawal with a hamstring injury, replaced by Paul Hopgood. Stynes returned from his ankle injury without missing a match.
