Biggest loss in Round 3

After notching their first win in almost a year in round 2, normal service resumed for the Demons in a week of high controversy. During the week Ron Barassi had shifted Michael Byrne to Hawthorn without notice, and on the same day that the side he left was being beaten senseless at Kardinia Park the former Demon ruckman was 100km away at Waverley booting 8 goals in a 143 point Hawthorn win - three more goals for the day than his old side managed in total.

The most entertaining part of the day for any Demons fans who had dared to venture to Kardinia Park was Barry Crocker singing a new version of the Geelong theme song through the sun roof of a Mercedes. The Demons then proceded to have their own Barry Crocker, and an almighty pile up of three defenders which gifted the Cats a goal two minutes in set the tone of ineptitude which was to follow.

The Cats should have won by more, and were it not for the tireless work of Peter Keenan, Graham Gaunt, Steven Icke, Robert Flower and Gerard Healy they surely would have suffered the same sort of pounding that their former ruckman was delivering to Footscray at VFL Park. At the time it was Melbourne's biggest ever loss against the Cats.

O'Donnell, Crosswell and Johnson suffered eye, hip and calf injuries respectively.
