On Melbourne's radar after kicking 11 goals in a game between their best country zone prospects in September 1977, O'Dwyer was picked to debut at 16-years-old after just one training run with the ailing Demons. He came in directly from Shepparton, where he kicked 82 goals for the season, without playing once with Melbourne's Reserves.
O'Dwyer goalled with his first kick in league football but didn't play another game for the rest of the year. He returned to Shepparton United and injured his knee at the end of 1979. He returned to Melbourne in 1980 but missed most of the year due to the injury, appearing in Reserves and Under 19s games. Played six further senior matches in 1981 and one in 1982 but was never involved in a win during his Melbourne career.
After his VFL career ended O'Dwyer crossed to the SANFL and played 21 games for Norwood from 1983 to 1986 and then with Woodville. Later coached at Henley Juniors.
