Melbourne first tried to sign Smeaton before the 1950 Wimmera League season, but had to wait until 1951 to get their hands on him. He used his last year in the country to kick 120 goals, including 16 in one game and 17 in three finals matches. It seemed the wait was well worth it when he booted nine goals in his first intra-club game, causing officials to rush to label him the "best forward recruit since John Coleman"
Ararat gave him a two match permit to play in the VFL, with the promise that he'd be cleared if he played in the first two games of 1951. He applied for a full clearance, denying that he wasn't happy with how the ball was being delivered to him. After a slow start he he lived up to his promise early, kicking twenty goals in his first ten games before being dropped, despite at one point early in the year threatening to leave because he didn't like the service he was receiving from midfielders. It was only the signing of Noel Clarke which convinced him to stay.
Smeaton played another game late that year, but was out of favour. In January 1952 he was appointed coach of Castlemaine but didn't take up the job. After having special coaching in the forward arts from Norm Smith in the pre-season, he booted 13 goals in six games before leaving the club again.
At the end of 1952 Smeaton was cleared to Ballarat East as playing coach and remained there until the end of 1953. He returned to Ararat in 1955, and kicked 45 goals in the first four rounds of the season.
