First Game
Tom McLean
Melbourne debuted their ninth new player for the season but were beaten again. Despite only going behind at three-quarter time the Demons were run over in the last quarter to drop their third straight game. First gamer Tom McLean couldn't have an impact, he was never called off the bench.
Melbourne's midfield dominated the game, but with Smeaton playing a near lone hand amongst the forwards he couldn't deliver victory on his own. In a fast, open game, the home side's high marking helped it to an 11 point lead at quarter time. A stiffening breeze worked in Fitzroy's favour, and a goal on the bell saw them go in level at the half. The Demons failed with their turn with the newly strong wind. Their only goal for the term came when they were 18 points down, and the visitors came home with four goals to two to win easily. John Beckwith was sent to the middle to try and give his side a different look, but Fitzroy's defence was too strong.
Best were McKenzie, Jackson and Denis Cordner. Ian McLean replaced the injured Johnston in the last quarter, Tom McLean was an unused sub.
