After their first win in nine weeks on the previous Saturday, the Demons came up against Footscray playing to finish second and win the double chance. Melbourne started well, but one goal across the middle two quarters as the home side added nine finished them off - and even winning the last quarter only just dragged the margin back under 40 points.

The only time the Demons had their more fancied opponents under pressure was the first quarter, but the Dogs upped their intensity and targeted the Melbourne players who were doing the most damage. Several quick goals in the second gave Footscray an 18 point lead going into the last change, and the Demons only put in token resistance from there.

Best were Spencer, Williams and Arnold.
