Having gotten their season back on track with a win against North Melbourne a week before, the Demons travelled down the highway to Geelong trying to take another step towards the final four. Despite their poor form over the previous three seasons Melbourne held an excellent record at Kardinia Park - having not lost there since 1956.

The visitors took a one point lead into the first change, but it was more luck than skill as well as a stout defensive effort by the backline. Despite losing ruckman John Newman in the second term the Cats class came to the fore in the second term, seeing them sneak into the lead at the long break.

Melbourne controlled the third quarter, thanks to Stan Alves and Ken Emselle, but couldn't make it count on the scoreboard and shaved just two points off the Cats' lead going into the final term.

It took Geelong until the second half of the last quarter to run away with the game.

Best were Alves, Davis and Emselle. Melbourne didn't make any replacements, leaving first gamer Tony Sullivan and Bob Stewart unused.
