Melbourne win by 35 points
In favourable weather there was little effect from the wind as the MCG was well sheltered. Melbourne went into the game without C. Gardner, J. Gardiner, Pearce, Langley, E. Cordner and Parkin but still managed to prevail comfortably.
The first quarter saw Geelong leap to a 25 point lead in a high standard game, but as it devolved into a scramble after quarter time Melbourne took over with seven goals. They failed to kick one in the third quarter, but kept Geelong to one to maintain their lead going into the final term when they ran away with the game.
The win helped the Demons leapfrog St. Kilda, who lost heavily to Carlton on the same day, and avoid the dreaded wooden spoon.
Best were Conquest, Moodie and Peacock. Conquest missed the last quarter after suffering an ankle injury just before three-quarter time.
