Losses to Adelaide and Essendon had hurt, but they could be written off as defeats against genuine finals contenders but when the Demons crashed to the lowly Tigers it was the sure sign that one of their familiar mid-season slumps had begun.

Already the underdogs Richmond's cause hadn't been helped by losing captain Dale Weightman and Vice-Captain Michael Pickering as well as David Honeybun as late withdrawals.

With his side 11 points behind at three-quarter time John Northey gave a short address to the huddle then walked away to let the players discuss the match amongst themselves. The Demons responded to Northey's irregular coaching techniques and hit the front early in the last term but Richmond struck back to win by a goal.

The lead changed four times after the 14 minute mark of the last quarter but eventually it was Richmond who kicked the last two goals to put their nose back in front. A Garry Lyon point dragged the margin back to a goal but Richmond held on.

John Northey was scathing, saying "how many times have we had the opportunity to sit up in second spot? It's happened again this year and we have let it slip by. We have players here who believe their standard of play is far better than what it is. They have to be realistic in that area. It's been a concern for the last four years."

Best were J. Stynes, G. Lovett and Howat. Garry Lyon was reported for striking Tiger Barry Young in the first quarter and suspended for one match. Young was suspended for two games for striking Lyon in the same incident.
