Melbourne beat Fitzroy on the opening day of the season, but failed to repeat the dose at the start of the second round of home and away matches. The match was originally set for the Saturday but the league moved two weekend matches to the Coronation Day public holiday.

Hughie Odgers was in charge of the team, replacing the retired Vin Coutie and he won the toss but as there was no breeze to speak of it didn't give his side much of an advantage. Yet again the game was ruined as a spectacle due to muddy conditions, and the game often descended into farcical scenes.

Each club managed a goal in the first quarter before the Maroons started to pull away. After conceding two goals in a row the visitors' first attacking thrust of the quarter gave them their second goal but Fitzroy kicked 3.7 for the term. In the mud the game often became a violent spectacle.

Although they had been on the run for most of the game the Reds showed better form late in the match but they'd left too much work for themselves and were beaten easily.

Best were Tomkins, Fitzpatrick and Odgers.
