Initially recruited as a forward Odgers eventually played in defence.

After missing much of 1912 when he moved to the country Odgers returned under the assumed name "Hughes" (though it was hinted at in that week's Football Record that it was an open secret it was Odgers) to play the last two games of the season.

Missed seven seasons before and after World War I before returning for a last season in 1920. He had served in the conflict beginning in 1916.

Before the 1922 season started he was granted a clearance to a club in New South Wales.
