A two time former premiership captain of the Scotch College side, Elliott sued the VFL at 18-years-old old as he was zoned to Geelong but he didn't want to play for them and the Cats wouldn't clear him to St Kilda. Melbourne wound up with the rights to Elliott but waived them to St. Kilda as part of the deal that sent Carl Ditterich to the Demons.
One of St Kilda's most consistent players, he walked out of Moorabbin in 1979 after a disagreement with Saints management. He tried to win a clearance to Melbourne to join his brother and recent Demon recruit, Glenn but was initially denied and had to begin the season training with VFA side Dandenong. Robert didn't win his clearance until April, after Richmond and Hawthorn also showed interest. His other brother Bruce was cleared to the Demons with him as part of the deal.
The three brothers played together for the first time in Round 5, 1979, and while Glenn left after one season Robert remained at the Demons for three. His best year was 1980 when he played 18 games, won five Brownlow Votes and was a Victorian state player. He found his opportunities more limited under Ron Barassi during the Demons' horror 1981 season and left at the end of that year.
