Melbourne travelled down the highway looking to kick start their season with a win, but found a Geelong side who were too quick and too good in the air.
Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter Melbourne opened up a 13 point lead at the first change but within minutes of the restart the Cats used the wind to their advantage and took the lead back. Despite the desperate attempts of captain-coach Carl Ditterich to lead by example and lift his side they failed to capitalise on the advantage of kicking with the breeze and were run over in the last quarter.
Despite kicking three goals Phil Carman looked a liability, giving away ten free kicks for the day. Lacking drive and motivation his teammates succumbed easily to the Cats and it was another loss for Melbourne in Sleepy Hollow.
Best were G. Elliott, Ditterich and Sullivan
