After a shock victory against Minor Premiers Geelong in the Semi Final, Melbourne took up against league powerhouses Collingwood with the lure of the second Grand Final in their history if they could win.
With an unchanged side Melbourne took the lead with the breeze in the first quarter but with Richard Taylor, Hugh Dunbar and Harry Davie all injured during the game, the Fuschias gradually faded away and ended the day with just 15 fit men. They hadn't put up enough of a gap with the wind and the Pies were back in front by half time.
The match result could have been even worse if Ivor Warne-Smith hadn't been rock solid in defence. At one point he took nine marks in eleven minutes in a besieged defence, but Melbourne failed to score a goal in the second half and after winning their first final in nearly a quarter of a century the week before they were out of the competition.
Best were Warne-Smith, Corbett and Thomas. Injuries from the game included concussion to Davie, back and leg issues for Taylor and an unspecified injury to Dunbar. Ivor Warne-Smith was discovered to be playing with broken ribs suffered the previous week.
