Initially from Mildura, Prymke failed to attract the attention of Richmond in the final days of recruiting zones so moved to the SANFL. While playing for Woodville-West Torrens he missed a season with a back injury, but was drafted by Melbourne at the end of 1992. Prymke opted to stay in South Australia and was rewarded with an SANFL premiership the next year.
Crossing to the AFL in 1994, Prymke was an instant hit in Melbourne's defence. Playing almost every game over his first two seasons he finished third in the 1995 Best and Fairest and signed a two year contract extension but then saw his career destroyed by a return of his back injury. Chronic rheumatoid arthritis restricted him to four games in 1996. He travelled to America to see a back specialist before the 1997 season but couldn't beat his issues, retiring after Round 16 that year.
In his autobiography Garry Lyon named Prymke one of the best defenders he had played with.
