Signed by Melbourne in August 1944 after kicking more than 100 goals for East Malvern. Played on a half forward flank in the VFL, and played in the 1948 premiership.

Almost a third of Bowman's matches for Melbourne came as a Reserve, coming off the bench nine times in 1947 and seven more in 1948. He was vice-captain of the Seconds premiership side in 1949 but could only manage four senior matches and one the next year.

Bowman crossed to Hawthorn before Round 3, 1950 and played there until the end of 1951.

After his VFL career ended Bowman joined Sandy Bay in Tasmania and played in a premiership with them. He also won a flag with Mayne in Queensland before joining Sydney side Newtown, captain/coaching premierships in 1968 and 1969 before moving to North Shore for 1970 to 1972. He rejoined Newtown in 1973. In 1968 he had tied for the league goalkicking at 41 years old.

Bowman coached the Tasmanian State of Origin side to a 7-1 win/loss record and is a member of the Queensland football Hall of Fame.
