Scanlan played four seasons across six years after debuting a month and a half after his 16th birthday. He missed the 1945 and 1946 seasons because of war service with the Navy.
He made some appearances in the seconds during 1946 before being invited back to the senior list as a half-forward. He also played for Sandringham during his absence.
"Bluey" Scanlan missed several weeks during 1948 with a leg injury then crossed along with his brother Bill to Footscray in shortly before the 1949 season. The next year he was cleared to Port Fairy as playing/coach. Scanlan make a shock return to Bulldogs training in the 1952 pre-season but didn't make their list and moved to Sandringham where he played 18 games that year before being cleared to Tocumwal as coach. Joined Cobram in 1954.
