Hawthorn returned to the MCG for the first time since their 1975 Grand Final loss, and they were in no mood to play second fiddle to a Demon team that came into the game 4-2, but who hadn't yet convinced.

The Hawks were sloppy early, trailing by 19 points after the first eleven minutes, but in the second quarter they kicked eight goals to open up a two point lead at halftime.

The third quarter was a tight affair, but another eight goal term in the last quarter included five in 23 minutes from Michael Moncrieff who got nine in total, helped sinked Melbourne.

Des Campbell and Welsh of Hawthorn were reported for striking each other in the last quarter. Campbell was suspended for two games. Shane Fitzsimmons (ankle) was replaced by Lyons at half time and Ray Smith (concussion) by Osborne in the last quarter.
