One of the great midfielders of his time, McKenzie was usually one of his side's best even though they only made the finals once in his eight season career.

During 1913 he took time out in the middle of the year to "build up his strength" in Echuca, returning soon after for the team's trip to Tasmania.

He returned after the World War I recess to play 13 matches in the winless 1919 season before leaving the club.

McKenzie represented the VFL in a game against the Bendigo League in 1912. In 1919 he did the same against Ballarat. He was cleared to New South Wales in early 1920 and played for Newtown, also representing NSW against Victoria in 1921.

McKenzie's brother trialled with Melbourne in the 1912 pre-season but did not play a game.
