Edmund "Ned" Sutton, has the earliest recorded birthdate of any Melbourne VFL player. The next closest, five years younger, is Alf Healing.
Sutton began his career at Carlton in 1888 and played as a defender there until being cleared to Melbourne in May 1895. In 1892 he was Carlton's vice-captain, and captained Melbourne's first two seasons in the league. He was also in charge of a VFL side against Ballarat in 1897.
