Sutton began his career at Carlton in 1888 and played as a defender there until being cleared to Melbourne in May 1895. In 1892 he was Carlton's vice-captain, and captained Melbourne's first two seasons in the league. He was also in charge of a VFL side against Ballarat in 1897.
