The only unbeaten side in the competition further improved their premiership credentials with a massive win over the Blues. In what would remain their largest against Carlton until Round 6, 2004, Melbourne were 15 goals to nil in front early in the last quarter before Carlton found some respectability with three late goals.
Carlton had some excuses, they were missing a number of their best players, but the ones they had barely fired a shot until the last 10 minutes of the game.
Moysey, Woods and Mitchell were amongst the best.
