After five consecutive finals seasons, Melbourne was expected to make the top eight again despite the loss of premiership players Libby Birch, Maddie Gay, Casey Sherriff and Eliza West through trades in the off-season. Their thin list couldn't withstand a number of serious injuries to first choice players, including to Olivia Purcell (face), Tayla Harris (shoulder) and Lauren Pearce (wrist). For the first time in the club's history they lost four consecutive games, and were fielding replacement players by Round 6. That was the turning point of their year, and five wins in the last six games saw them fall just short in the final round. After beating Collingwood in they sat inside the eight, before being passed by ((Essendon later in the round.

Alongside Captain Kate Hore, the leadership group was vice-captain Tyla Hanks, Sarah Lampard and Paxy Paxman.

Due to a condensed fixture, Melbourne played two games in Round 7.c
