Lowest score and largest lost against Hawthorn
After four consecutive wins, Melbourne had reignited finals hopes that seemed dead earlier in the year. In their way were the resurgent Hawks, featuring Demon premiership players Casey Sherriff and Eliza West, who were sitting second on the ladder. In their first visit to Cairns, Melbourne had an early lead and kept the high-scoring Hawks to a reasonably low score but were unable to kick a winning total. In the last 30 seconds Lily Mithen had a shot that would have cut the margin to a point but missed and Hawthorn survived, leaving Melbourne needing a win in last round, and for results to go their way if they were going to make finals again.
They were forced into two late changes, with captain Kate Hore (quad) and Gabrielle Colvin (concussion), replaced in the selected side by Saraid Taylor and Lily Johnson respectively.
Best were McNamara, Hanks and Goldrick. Goldrick suffered a concussion.
