Played under lights between the premiers of the Victorian and South Australian leagues, South Adelaide came off a five day break from their Grand Final triumph. Missing premiership players, they were 12 points in front at three quarter time before Melbourne kicked 3.6 to 0.1 in the final term to win.

Townsend's fourth goal snatched the lead 23 minutes into the last quarter and Melbourne held on to win. Norm Smith said: "South were the better side on the night and had more play". He described them as the fastest team he'd ever seen.

Other players included Adams, Davis, H. Mann, Massey, Roet and Watson.
