Melbourne opened their season with a comfortable win over North in Hobart. With a firing half-forward line, and Max Gawn back in All-Australian form they kicked six goals to three in the first quarter to set up a big lead.
A strong breeze picked up in the second quarter, and North briefly threatened but only cut nine points off the lead. The Demons ran away with the game in the third, kicking seven goals to one and held on to win comfortably.
Best were Neal-Bullen, Harmes and Gawn. Jordan Lewis sat out the last three quarters after experiencing a strained calf. Clayton Oliver was fined $1500 for misconduct.
