Richmond win by 32 points

Goalkickers: Jeff Farmer 3, David Neitz 2, Ben Beams 1, Brad Green 1, Russell Robertson 1, Cameron Bruce 1

Jeff Farmer was reported in the first ten minutes for charging Nick Daffy, and the Demons never got going despite being within striking distance for most of the day. Farmer got three goals, and two weeks for the charge.

Richmond used pre-season trial rules of no line through the centre circle, to double-team Jeff White with multiple ruckmen, leaving White playing at full forward. With the Tiger midfield running rampant there was nothing Melbourne could do to get their noses in front leaving them on the verge of a first round Ansett Cup exit. Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin spent much of the day on the bench due to a lack of match fitness - he still managed to pick up a bruised eye when he did come on.

Best were Williams, Brown and Nicholson. Troy Simmonds broke a bone in his ankle during the last quarter, and Woewodin suffered a bruised eye.

Melbourne floated the option of challenging Farmer's suspension, who claimed he had been trying to shepherd for Luke Williams, but were unable to turn up new video footage to use as evidence. Melbourne's failure to qualify for the Ansett Cup semi finals meant he missed Round 1.
