1905 Exhibition Match vs Traralgon District

Saturday 12 August - Traralgon Show Ground

Melbourne 3.1, 7.6, 8.10, 10.14.74
Traralgon District 1.4, 2.4, 3.4, 5.7.37

Melbourne win by 37 points

Despite Melbourne's lowly position on the VFL ladder it was clear by midway through the first quarter that they were too good for the locals.

Traralgon weren't disgraced, but they didn't play with the same system as their city opponents. Melbourne players picked their targets when passing, while the home team merely kicked in hope and often the ball landed in the arms of their opponents.

Melbourne kicked into the wind in the first quarter, but still managed to open up a lead of just under two goals, and when they had their opportunity with the breeze in the second quarter they extended the gap to 39.

The margin was extended again in the third before Melbourne went through the motions in the final term and only added one more point before the end of the game.

Best were Conquest, Coutie and McKay. Joe Pearce suffered a broken collarbone which ended his season, while Ernie Vollugi had to retire from the field in the second half after suffering a heavy bump.
