Despite Melbourne's lowly position on the VFL ladder it was clear by midway through the first quarter that they were too good for the locals.
Traralgon weren't disgraced, but they didn't play with the same system as their city opponents. Melbourne players picked their targets when passing, while the home team merely kicked in hope and often the ball landed in the arms of their opponents.
Melbourne kicked into the wind in the first quarter, but still registered the first three goals of the game. They held a nine point lead at quarter time, then extended the gap to 39 at half time after their use of the wind. The lead was extended further in the third before Melbourne went through the motions in the final term and only added one more point to the full time margin.
Best were Conquest, Coutie and McKay. Joe Pearce suffered a broken collarbone which ended his season, while Ernie Vollugi had to retire from the field in the second half with a knee injury after suffering a heavy bump.
