The 18-year-old was drafted to Melbourne at the same time as Brian Stynes but saw his development hampered when he suffered a broken arm early in 1989. He'd played a season in the Under 19s in 1988, and after returning from the broken arm midway through the year he then suffered an injury where his pelvis was displaced and groin ripped from the bone.

Ineligible for the Under 19s competition in 1990, Melbourne delisted him. He returned to Ireland for a holiday and never returned.
