September 1884 match vs Williamstown

Saturday 20 September - Garden Reserve

Williamstown 0.9, 1.10
Melbourne 1.0, 3.9

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Stubbs 1, Murray 1, Spooner 1

After six games without a win, including five losses in a row before a draw against South Melbourne the previous Saturday, Melbourne finally broke through for their sixth and last VFA win of the season - and their second against the league newcomers in their first season.

Williamstown, on their home ground, had the wind in their favour in the first half but couldn't break through Melbourne's defence for a goal. The visitors spent much of the first half punting the ball out of bounds whenever they got it, waiting for their chance with the wind. The locals adopted the same time wasting tactics in the second, as well as unnecessary roughness, but managed to take the lead before Melbourne overhauled them with three to win

Best were Franks, Harry and Moss.
