The junior Richmond club was supposed to play with 20 against Melbourne's 15, but the home side could only field 13. They carried on regardless, but were restricted to a draw. The few spectators present didn't see either team even remotely threaten a goal.

It was reported later that a number of Richmond fans spent the game abusing and issuing threats to Melbourne's players.
